How much do you think it would help one's chances having a rec. letter from Barack Obama. Do you think it would move an above average applicant (~33 3.8) into the upper tier? Just asking hypothetically, not because it would actually ever happen.

I think it would be hard to believe that Barack actually wrote the letter (as opposed to some staff administrator) even if you got it from him. Think about it, how many people does he actually have the time to interact with to the point that he could write them a letter? It'd have to be someone who is already a pretty big fish (cabinet member, special advisor, etc). If that was the case, it would probably help, though you'd have to be such a BAMF already to get to that point that I don't know if his letter could actually do anything more.

Now a personal phone call on the other hand...perhaps with some autographs for the kids? Now we're talking.

There was a girl rushing my sorority whose resume included references from several D-list celebrities, as well as Justin Timberlake's grandparents. Needless to say, she was not invited to join my sorority.

most definitely, zero chance. Obama and former presidents have better things to do.

I don't know OP. If you're part of that 47%, you're gonna have a bad time.

Not as good as a letter of rec from Nelson Mandela or Gandhi, or Paul Farmer. But better than a letter of rec from Nicki Minaj or Saddam Hussein

I don't understand how someone asking a hypothetical question turns into troll accusations.

I don't think recs from political figures is a good idea, since people can be too sensitive about this. You may be looked at negatively by an adcom who doesn't support that politician.

No sarcasm needed 😕 The OP made it quite clear this was a hypothetical question, not unlike a poop hotdog.

Wait, poop hotdogs aren't a thing? Then what the f*** did I eat to get into medical school??!

Seriously, I was accepted to be an intern at the whitehouse last year (but choose a McNair intership instead) and thought about this. Even if it wasn't the actual POTUS, I wondered how much a letter from the whitehouse would help. The project I was interested in was health care policy. IDK maybe it would help if one was applying MD/JD.
