How much does a weak "why us?" secondary essay hurt?

I've heard from friends that a weak "why us" essay shows immediate disinterest in the school, which impacts you greatly.

I'm sure it hurts, but how much? what do you think??

FWIW, in my own experience, my "why us" essay for my state school was a copy paste of a very poorly written essay for another school's secondary question- this showed, and I was rejected pre-interview. However, getting interviews at every other school (ranked much higher) -probably due to my stats+ significantly better essays.
