It is well documented that when considering strictly MD academic/faculty positions or strictly PhD academic/faculty positions, it is uncommon to make tenure at a university that is considered "more prestigious" than the university from which you earned your degree. Does this trend hold true with MSTP graduates or is the prestige of the combined degree itself enough to potentially enable upward mobility?

I think what you're saying applies more to your postdoc/fellowship than to where your do your PhD, and that's true even for PhD-only scientists. People at average "non-prestigious" MSTPs (including my own) matched anywhere they wanted.

However, I do think which program you choose for residency matters, because not all institution have the mentorship and/or infrastructure to support you, and the 6 months of protected time that you get from a clinical fellowship is not quite sufficient if you're hoping to stay in research afterwards.
