How much does one make during residency?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
30,000-40,000ish from what I've seen online. You can actually seen the compensation for some programs on their websites. Also, I've noticed that some programs have extra 'perks'-- free pda's, free child care, free lunches, total compensation for travel to conferences, etc.

I believe that its more like 40 for a first year and that increases little by little each year.

For interns starting this summer, it's roughly $37,000-$47,000, depending on the hospital and city, and it goes up each year for increased level and inflation. Unfortunately, it doesn't always correlate with cost of living in the given city.

Take out 1/3rd as taxes and you have the gross actual take home.

actually, the tax should be less than 20%. more like 18%.

you pay 15% for everything below $30000, and 25% of everything between $30000-70000

and then you have your net take home.

Go to FREIDA http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/srch/ and search for the residency type you're interested in and the area of the country. It does depend on region, but the range seems to be about $30,000-$45,000. On FREIDA you will see the individual programs and what they offer for each year, as well as info about "perks", average hours per week, amount of call you're expected to take, vacation time, insurance info, etc.

edit: oops, I see somebody already posted a link to FREIDA. I think it's more informative to look at individual programs for your region rather than the national average, though.
