How much does what school you go to affect residency options?

I have been accepted to a couple of schools, and was wondering how much importance I should give to medical school rankings.

For example, all other things equal (actual knowledge gained, class standing, clinical proficiency), would I have many more options and opportunities to do a competitive residency going to school at OHSU (#3 primary care, #35 research), instead of Albert Einstein College of Medicine (#22 primary care, #40 something research)?

I know that there are many other considerations when choosing a medical school. However, cost, quality of life, location etc. aside, if I want to keep my options open for residency would I be doing myself a big favor by going to a higher ranked school? Is the difference between the rankings of OHSU and Albert Einstein significant?

Any insight would be appreciated!

Those two might have better affiliations with their respective coasts (OHSU west, Einstein east) but they're both great schools. You should be able to get whatever you want from those schools if you work hard.

In general, more than the typical SDN user wants to believe and less than your parents probably believe.

But between those schools, there should be no difference beyond the residency programs run by OHSU and AECOM.

You would have more entree at NYC area residencies from AECOM, and similarly would have more pacific northwest entree from OHSU.

I realize that says nothing about "competitive residencies" but there are geographical realities that do impact your residency chances.

Would you know a competitive residency if it walked in your door? Really?

This.

Besides location preference, there won't be much difference. Residency program directors are busy people and rarely keep up with the latest med school rankings. Even if they did, no one would split hairs between 35th and 40th rank. That's just silly.
