Not only do they work a lot of hours seeing a lot of patients at their office(s), but they are available to their patients by beeper when they're out of the office. OMFSs also spend time at hospitals treating their medically compromised patients. It's a very busy pace especially for those who don't work in a group practice.

Before I make an appointment with any medical practitioner, I usually ask how much the doctor makes. Once I get to the office, I tend to also ask the practitioner his or herself because, we all know how often office staff tell lies. Any how, my dentist, he makes 899,901 a year...I know it is a lot, but that means he is good and that is why I chose him.

My teeth sparkle

Did you mean 60 patients a week?! If he's only bringing home 300,000 seeing 60 patients a day, he's probably doing something seriously wrong.

Either that or he has some serious overhead or billing issues...

At 6 days/week x 60 patients/day... even at $50 per appointment working 45 weeks out of the year would give him a gross of $810,K... At these rates, 60% overhead would still net him $324,K...and we all know he's getting more than $50 per patient.

Doesn't sound right... Gotta be sixty per week. Is it really possible to see 60 per day?

I have an uncle who works in southern california who makes over $550,000.

My dentist makes 100 Million/year and now he owns his own country.

Please be honest. Thanks

You have got to be kidding me. After the dentist is so gracious to show me around his office and let me shadow, was I supposed to have asked, "Oh, by the way, how much do you make? And please be honest so I can test my friends on SDN."

Actually, my dentist wouldn't tell me how much he makes, but he told me he pays over 300,000$/yr in taxes.

Some dentists I know who make only $300-350 day. Can you believe that? My friend, who is a nurse, makes almost the same money but with no debt.

Yes, I shadowed a pair of oral surgeons, they seemed to do much better then that.

I'm convinced there are a lot of dentists that have horrible business and interpersonal skills. Some of the people I met that are planing to go to dental school -- quite frankly I can not see them being competition.

How the hell is that possible?

Well, it says "his office sees", not "he sees".

Many times a dentist sets up a clinic and hires lots of other dentists to work for him as associates, and keeps expanding his clinic that way. I know a dentist that does that and has 6 other dentists working for him as associates. My dentist in fact is an associate to the main dentist but has to pay about 60% of her income to him b/c she doesn't pay for the materials.

But the head dentist makes about $60K/month, definitely still more than 300K per year.

I'd rather work 4 days a week and make a comfortable 130 - 160k a year than to work 6 days a week and make 280+. Come on guys, we're going to D school to work less and make more money... not the opposite!

Sorry for not being clear... I thought i said the "office" see 60 patients... theres more than 1 Doc in the office.. and the 300,000 was just being modest.... im sure its much more than that....

I plan on working for the state first before opening my own practice. That's what my dentist does and he gets patients from where he works for the state and their families also recommend people ot see him. The fact that he is also a very talented dentist with a very loveable personality could help.

it really depends on the state and the city. you really have to compare apples to apples-- cost of living vs. pay

and by the way, there is nothing wrong with asking a dentist (from the perspective of a dentist-wanna-be) how much (s)he makes. You wouldn't by real estate before asking how much it costs, so why wouldn't you inquire to see how much your future profession will make?
