How much GPA is consdidered good to get into most externships and eventually into residnecy. And do they stress on students performance in second year more than 1st year or they see it over all. bcoz so may times in beginning the student is still adjusting and his grades might suffer in beginning but as time goes by he / she might be getting "A"s but at the end of year since his total GPA is compilation of both 1st yr and 2nd yr courses may be his GPA suffers even though his second yr GPA was extraordinary.

And most externships say a GPA of 2.0 is required. Are they really serious abt it. or tats just the minimum and they hardly accept students who have GPA in that range. i mean for an undergrad GPA of 2.0 is very low but seeing the first year courses i dont think 2.0 GPA looks that bad as one cud see it during the undergrad courses.

Oh one more thing, i know this had been asked many times but again iam asking. Is a 2.5 from upper tier school like DMU or Scholl comparable to a 3.1 from a lower tier school. or the programs see every school equally?

2.0 is the bare minimum just to stay off probation at most pod schools, so they're basically just saying that anyone can apply.

It all really depends on how many other students are interested in the programs in that given year. Interest waxes and wanes depending on number of pod students, their interests, etc. As long as you have a 3.0 or more, you should get most or all of the clerkships you want. Aug-Nov get pretty competitive at top level residencies, though. If your GPA is significantly below most other applicants or you haven't passed boards, then you might get denied for a popular externship or have to take an early month where you won't look very sharp or late month after CRIPS.

Some residencies try to be real sticklers for high gpa from their clerks, but when they take say, 3 per month for 9 months, who knows if they'll get 25-30 people who are all ranked top 5 at their pod school? Some years they might... some maybe not. One I applied to told me their clerkship acceptees usually have a 3.7+, and I just told them that I'd apply and see what happens. If you are applying to one you're not sure you'll get, you can apply for another as a backup clerkship for that month, but be sure to promptly and politely cancel with one of them if they both accept you.

as a first year pod student your job is to get the best grades that you can while learning as much as you can. Then as a second year you can start looking at externship options while still learning and getting good grades.

At this point IMO it is not advisable to start thinking about minimal grades. Yuou should be aiming for a 4.0. I understand that this is not a reality for most students but it should be your goal. You should be aiming to learn everything possible.

Then when it comes time for applying to externships you will be set to apply to any that you want.

Iam just asking this in general because i was going thru the archives and found a website full of clerkships and many were saying just 2.0 GPA. i was just curious.

This is very good advice^. I forgot cool vkb was just a first year student.

Your goal early on is just to pass your classes and learn as much as possible. If you are applying yourself to the best of your ability in basic sciences, clinical sciences will make more sense and be easier. Everything with clinics/externships/residency will fall into place if you do research when that time approaches. It's never too early to chat with upperclassmen to find out a bit about what residencies are good and what they like about clinicals, but your main focus is just your basic sciences exams. Mid or late 2nd year is when you want to really start reading articles and frequenting the CASPR/CRIP website to learn about residency programs and clerkships. You sound like you're highly interested in your education and the subjects you're being taught, and you'll do well.
