So, looking for a place to stay in LA and most of the rents are at least 1/2 my take home pay (1/3 gross) if I don't want to stay in the ghetto/barrio. IAnd I don't want to get a roommate because my hubby will likely be following me down within the next few mos. I am wondering what percent of your measly intern salary your rent takes up, especially for those of you living in expensive cities.

Thanks!

i'm a pgy-3, and live in north hollywood (no ho), and my rent is 1102.96 per month (yea, my landlord tacks on some 2.96 charge for some los angeles city tax). my take home pay (the part you care about) is 2754. so, it's roughly 40% of my salary!

i believe my residency is in about the 75th percentile in terms of pay.

This just shows how sad residency has become.

indeed. moonlighting helps, which i didn't include in my figures above.

13 weeks and 3 days left of residency though, so supposedly it will be better as an attending.

Let us know if it's all a conspiracy theory. Best of luck. 👍

Hey H24G - can you find a temporary place while you wait for your hubby to move? :luck:

eh, we decided moving again in the middle of an intensive internship would be a lot of work, and he may very well be able to come by the summer. Besides, what if I didn't have a hubby? Would I HAVE to have a roommate? My mother -in-law has been "visiting" for over a year and I am ready to be on my own! 🙁

I know a resident who is at your hospital who lives alone. I'll e-mail her and see if I can put you two in touch if that's ok with you!

So, is this pretty standard? I just realized screwed up the poll by making the 30-50% category. What I really want to know is if most people are looking at 40-50%!!! 😛

Hi,
I am single and will be going to LA for residency soon. From what I hear 1/2 of my paycheck will go to rent. I am almost at the point that I am considering finding a roomie or getting a small studio....ugh!
