Hi,
I've decided that I need to take biochem for the new MCAT but at my university ochem 2 (chem 14D) (mechanisms, synthesis, etc.) is a PRE-req for chem 153A. Does anybody who has taken biochem 1 (carbohydrates, lipids, AA, nucleic acids, metabolism etc.) know how much ochem 2 is actually needed? Can I get by just taking the two together?

Definitely. I only took one semester of biochemistry and found almost nothing of Orgo II in the course content. Go ahead and take the two together. 🙂

At the end of my orgo 2 we began Biochem ( according to my prof it was for fun, and it happens to be his area of expertise). As much as I wasnt a fan of orgo 2, I absolutely loves the first biochem chapters and it had almost nothing to do with orgo 2. However we didn't get into very elaborate syntheses, so that might change.

Just read a biochem book before to see how you feel about it.

I took biochemistry and orgo 2 at the same time. It didn't affect me...

Biochemistry major here.

Essentially nothing in Organic 2 was relevant for my first biochemistry course. The most important topics, acid/base, resonance stabilization etc, you learn in organic 1 at my school.

A lot of universities actually have people take Biochemistry before Organic II.

It'd seem like an awful lot of work, though. Just be mindful and proactive with assignments.

I took Biochem I and II and did well; I didn't remember most of the nitty gritty ochem reactions/mechanisms (as evident by the pre-test lol). Not needed!

I know what school you're at! I'm taking 14B 🙂

didnt know schools did biochem 1 & 2.. lmfao

edit: must be nice

Would you be allowed to do that though?
My school does it the same way and I know that they tend to enforce pre-reqs. For instance, I wouldn't even be able to register for the course unless my transcript had Organic Chem 2 listed on it. That's just how our online registration system is designed though, I guess. Maybe your school is different.

At my school they don't let you take Biochem before you take Orgo 2 (neither can you graduate with a lifescience degree without taking Orgo 2). Virtually nothing I learned in Orgo 2 was useful for Biochem. On the other hand biology classes that deal with things at cellular lever could be very helpful.

Short answer: school specific.
