how much of an advantage does someone have if they allready have a degree, and they are working on something else during the application year (like masters or post-bach), compared to a third year student (junior) who is going through the traditional route to get into dental school?

I would think a significant advantage - what about you guys?

Does getting a masters or doing a post-bacc look better if you have a low GPA (~3.0)? Or is simply taking more classes to raise your GPA enough?

good question 🙂

but i think of it this way - if you've completed 4 years (or more) and obtained a degree - then there are two possibilities 1) you have a low/average GPA or 2) you have an above average GPA

in both cases, getting a masters or doing a post-bacc will lead to better grades (especially true for someone with low/average GPA)

so, my question is - do you think being in that kind of a position (obtaining masters/post-bacc) during the application cycle is an advantage over someone applying as a junior?

i hope this post makes sense 😳

well...considering the number of responses to my thread...i'm guessing there isn't that much of an advantage...oh well 😡

life goes on 🙁

in my opinion there is no advantage. generally the reason one would do a past-bac is because their undergrad grades were too low for dental school. thus, why wouldn't adcoms want someone who did it right the first time and has average/high grades already after their third year? having to do a masters may or may not be a disadvantage, but i definitly don't think it would be an advantage over traditional applicants. it definitly would be an advantage however compared to other people with grades too low to get in who did nothing before reapplying.
