How much of an effect does being URM do for an application?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've heard this alot and quite frankly it doesn't make any sense. Every channel tries to appeal to an audience regardless of their race. Are you implying that because said TV shows don't fit whatever subjective ideals you have to gather the focus of African-Americans it must only care about white people? Well that just doesn't make any sense to me good sir. I guess all the Hispanic, Asian, and native american programs on various channels are all apart of WET as well.

SDN has opened my eyes. I thought we were progressing, but I see people are still the same. Sad to see some of these people will be future doctors.

You must not know many older doctors... at least here you can justify the absurd comments with anonymity. I hear **** way worse openly from well-respected people that I know.

are you new to the internet?

Nope. I know what it symbolizes but the pictures just funny to me. Reminds me of the memes/motivational posters that I've seen with it. Lol

Hm? Well SDN is what I expected it to be. Very informing. People will always have conflicting views and they should be allowed to question the natural way of things if they see it as wrong or conflicting. Everyone does it, be it in their own minds or on a anonymous messaging board.

Dude this URM bashing needs to end, we're all Americans can't we just get along?

Nobody's progressing. People are just better at keeping their thoughts to themselves and working the system to further the oppression. A lot of Mitt Romney supporters on SDN I bet.

He's trying to spell out to you that the comment about WET was a joke, you know, that sarcasm thing that is supposed to be taken as funny.

It's kind of like "African Americans have black history month, why don't Caucasian people have a white history month? Because they already do, the other 11 months of the year."

I really hope you're more sensible than this in person... I now know why some AdComs talk about smart kids with ridiculous lack of personality.

Every time there is a URM thread on SDN I link it to Obama's email address on his website.

SHE was being sarcastic 🙄

srsly... the gender is in the sig of the post you quoted.

Thank you. I thought it was pretty obvious I was not being serious. And I promise, I'm really not a dude! I'm just more cynical than the average female! 😀

Haha my god, can't believe I missed that.

Lets not turn this into a political discussion shall we? People have their reasons for giving their vote to either candidate. Your reasons are no better. But please enlighten me on what said ways of "furthering the oppression" would be.

Nah, that won't fly. Don't you know it's only socially acceptable for racism to go one way these days?

I mean...we have BET but imagine the backlash if a WET showed up. Omigosh you're such a racisssssstrttt

I hope you are trolling because every time somebody uses this argument I can't help but laugh.

If you had the same advantage, you would find some way to justify it. Anywhoo, keep telling yourself that urms aren't qualified to be docs.

because THAT has never been lied about on the internetz.....

Someone in the pre-DO forum said that females should be URM because they make up only 30% of the physician population.

I see your Batman and raise you one Joker.

I used to agree with this. But then I thought about it and realized I was being riDQulous.

I lolled at the pic.👍
I don't think the OP or others here are saying Urms aren't qualified to be docs seeing as everyone who enters medical school becomes a doctor and receive about the same training but it seems the argument has rather been on how exactly they select those people.

Ehehehehe. I leave for two hours to total troll success with my WET comment...eheh. I'm positively tickled right now.

Do you know what most Urms go through just to get college? Do you know how hard and tough it is for Most Urms. Yes there are some who actually are aholes who take advntage of the urm status, but that doesn't mean all of us are rich..

ex: my high school had a graduating class of 1200 kids. Classes were with about 40-50 kids with limited textbooks, limited resources. Instead of books, we had metal detectors..

Your circumstances are most likely different than mines..

URMs should just go to crackpot DO schools where they belong, because they all have lower stats than white and Asian people.

Haha. If ORMs get into my med school, I demand separate benches and drinking fountains.

[orm= over-represented majorities...I feel like even if I make what is obviously a joke with urm there people will get their undies in a bunch]

I DEMAND SEPARATE BENCHES AND DRINKING FOUNTAINS FOR ALL RACES.

And sexual orientations.

Oh...and mcat scores.

I don't nor do you unless ofcourse you somehow inter-connected with all URMS and know their entire lives. Do you know all ORMs? I personally don't, but I can guarentee you I've met some that came from nothing but still had that same ORM status because of their skin color. Yes they are some ORMs that had everything but that doesn't mean they were all rich.

ex: My family doctor was a German man who came to the U.S. with his family and lived in a trailer park working jobs through high school. He was still held to the same standard as all ORMs because he was white.

Your circumstances are different from mine, but we shouldn't make generalizations about everyone that's my skin color or yours because of your sole experience.

You can see how this argument keeps being so persistent.

WHY I SAID MOST

I'm not ignorant to the fact that not everyone is the same, but most Urms share the same or similar situations..

I'm going to second this whole-heartedly. Even as a biracial applicant (black/white), it really can't be put into words how being a minority affects your outlook growing up based on large as well as trivial events over time.

I think minorities coming from an underprivileged background understand this a little more, but I grew up middle class, and I can say that although we have a biracial President, America still has a long ways to go as far as racial equality goes.

And in addition, it really saddens me that I could end up in a medical school with some of you posting in this thread. A URM applicant was obviously qualified enough to have an adcom predict they will pass the boards, so why wouldn't you be happy enough to learn from the applicant from a diverse background different from your own. It's not about picking a less-qualified applicant, it's about picking a more diversified applicant which will transform into a more diverse physician.

I think you skipped the first two pages of this thread.

👍👍 More female doctors = more chances for hot female doctors.

Fixed.👍

Yes, what we are actually saying is that we are thoroughly upset to be going to school with someone from a diverse background.

We are absolutely not saying that we don't like the way urm are held to a lower admissions standard.

I have changed my mind, and my demands...

I now demand my own benches and drinking fountain.

I'm hispanic but not URM and I still believe that the Urm effect is one of the best thing possible for those who need the extra push.

I'm going to find a megaphone so I can roll through the streets of my city just reciting details from the movie while people try to sleep.

ChAOsSSSs

I'm going to create a thread on sdn Titled: Urms

and then post the most important details of the movie!! muahaha

WHY I SAID MOST

I'm not ignorant to the fact that not everyone is the same, but most Urms share the same or similar situations..

But see this is where the problem lies. Most still leaves the those who are not in the generalized category. The normal black teen who grow up in a perfectly functional home and the Chinese immigrant who came from a poor family with almost nothing. It makes absolutely no sense to judge this based on race. If the logic behind it is certain races of people struggle more due to lack of things why isn't the focus on socioeconomic background? Seeing as by logic it would include the struggling race more than others but also everyone who is still struggling? I know the answer which is the same race doctor = better understanding. Its fine to want a more diverse population of doctors through the URM (I agree) but to say that the generalizations that accompany the URM label in accordance to applicants race is in anyway logical, accurate, or fair is pure bull.

are you going to work in an underserved community? are you genuine about your volunteer at the soup kitchen or women shelter or whatever you did to gain a leg up? I'm guessing no?

Oh I didn't volunteer in a soup kitchen, I went to Africa, Nigeria to be more exact. And I have no idea where I plan on working but I do plan on being the best doctor I can be. Leg up? Hm the only "leg up" I have is the fact that I worked pretty hard to get scholarships which will reduce the large burden of medical school but it'll still be pretty large.

lets agree to disagree sir. I wish you the best in your quest. I will be laughing my way to med school looking back at these posts.

Same to you good sir. I actually cant wait to get to one day enter the elusive residents and Physicians threads. Glad to see I'm not the only One Piece fan here too. Freaking love that anime

Affirmative action/diversity initiatives/whatever you want to call them are ridiculous, and as a URM I actually find them offensive. It just tells me that I'm not hardworking or smart enough to be on a level playing field with the rest of the country. I don't appreciate being coddled, especially when that coddling has discriminatory undertones.

At the same time, however, I would have been an idiot to not take advantage of it. The system is the way it is, and you've got to take what opportunities it gives you because you can bet on someone else doing the same. If you don't agree with the policies, you can try to change them in the voting booth. Hypocritical? Yes, but welcome to the ugly face of US racial politics.

I'm surprised this isn't brought up more here, but another reason I don't agree with affirmative action-esque policies is that at their core, they're lazy. Rather than make an effort to actually address the problem with education disparities, they've decided to just lower standards for URMs at the post-secondary education level. Why is the average african american or latino not as well educated or affluent as his white or asian counterparts? Are you going to actually put that issue on the table and examine why racial disparities exist in a society that prides itself on its "egalitarianism"? Or are you just going to gloss over it and pretend it's all ok as long as a certain fraction of us get into college every year.

Rather disappointing, if you ask me.

From this post alone, you sound like an incredibly opportunistic, unprincipled human being.

I can understand a black/native american patient not wanting a white doctor.

But I don't see why a black/native american patient would have a problem with an asian doctor.

So since both blacks and native americans can be represented by asians, do asians get an easier time going through medical school admissions?

One answer to this is that Asians in our society often get a "white pass."

What I mean by this: their socioeconomic status and social circles are such that they are often grow up to think "in a white manner." That's the best way I can put it.

So, we're catering to their racism. I had always understood racism to be a bad thing, but I guess we're cool with it unless white people do it. Like I said, next time I'm at the doctor's office I'm gonna go ahead and ask for a white doctor. We'll see how far that gets me.

Gosh I guess there's no hope for me after all.

You either don't get it pal or you're purposely being obtuse. RACISM IS NOT SYMMETRICAL.

Digest that then think about these matters again.
