I'm an MS1 and I'm thinking about taking on a research project. It's more stats/data analysis where I could potentially work anywhere from my laptop as opposed to doing wet lab stuff. I'm still in my Foundations block and haven't started anatomy lab so would it still be feasible to continue doing research throughout the year with anatomy hanging over me? That's the one aspect of med school that I am dreading.

FYI my curriculum is P/F.

Please feel free to share your experiences with doing research and when you were able to do it.

Do what you can while ur not in anatomy and then gauge how much work you can get done with it. Make sure u are doing well enough to pass ur courses firstly.

Hopefully you’ve told ur research mentors already about ur schedule before committing all the way or saying anything like “I can get project xyz done right away”.

You should only start research when you are confident it will not impact your learning. Only you can gauge this fact. You are in your 2nd month of M1 probably, just realize there is plenty of time to get manuscripts. I did not start until January of M1 and I have plenty of manuscripts out at this point of M2.

The absolute worst outcome is you start doing research so you can land derm, and you end up with a 220 on step 1 because you didn't learn anything (or you fail a school exam).
