How much time is spent working outdoors in vet school? I have migraines triggered by weather and am very highly functioning in dry climates and can be bed ridden in hot, humid climates when a thunderstorm comes through. If there is limited exposure to migraine-inducing weather, I am fine. So I am just wondering how often/how much/when vet school requires one to be outside... Thanks!

It seems like wetlabs would have you outside more than regular classes would...

One thing that comes to mind (in my experience) is that, in warmer weather, they often have the large animal and equine parts of the teaching hospital opened up (big garage door things) and so it's almost like you're outside when you aren't. There's no A/C in those sections either, just huge fans. But that's just the school I'm familiar with.

I think it will depend on your school; at ours, for example, we have a rural vet practice rotation during clinicals that is essentially ambulatory medicine, so you're outside a fair bit. Our large animal hospital, however, does not have big garage type doors.

I am sure the amount of outdoor work depends on the schools, but thanks for sharing your thoughts! I pretty much figured the most outdoor work would be large animal... does anyone know when schools tend to do LA rotations?

Unfortunately, medicine doesn't help. I have tried EVERYTHING and have basically been told that I should just ensure I am always living somewhere dry (which I am now and have no issues). However, the hubby is moving to New York for school (and I suppose I am too!) and because it's been so long since I've experienced problems, I actually kind of forgot how bad they are. But, I just went east to visit places to live and was really crippled. Which is now making me completely nervous about school.

Do most schools wait for the weather to be nice before doing any outdoor work? Do some (ie, Penn) do it during the winter months (when it's dry)?

Thanks again!

I'm pretty sure that animals need veterinary care year-round regardless of the weather conditions outside. If you get stuck on large animal clinical rotations during the summer your senior year you would have to deal with it.

I don't know what their scheduling of rotations is like. Here you can request a schedule but there are no guarantees.
