Im very interested in the filed and would like to know the steps to get into it...how's the residency program? Do you have to take s surgery training for a few years? IM?

I guess it depends where you are starting from...

4 years college (or really, however long it takes to get your bachelor's degree)

4 years medical school (apply for Ophtho during your 4th year)

1 internship year (i believe u can do medicine, surgery, pediatrics, or transitional year)

3 years of residency

1-3 years of fellowship....most are 1 year, a few are 2 years, and some research ones can be up to 3 years I hear (much more rare though)

the end...celebrate the wonderful career path you chose!

It would be helpful to shadow an ophthalmologist or do a rotation early. I had a one week rotation during my surgery block that helped me decide, mostly because the attendings and residents were so enthusiastic, knowledgeable, happy with their chosen career.

Seems like a good choice. Actually, Im in my 2md year of med school, not studying in the USA so I guess it's a little bit different, but I would like to do my residency in the USA.

Is ophto closely related to medicine? I know it's a speciality but once you practice it (I know most of you aren't attendings but still had a close contact with it's practice) you keep contact with all that you studied or at least a part of it? Hope so...

Thanks 😀
