Title sums it all. How much would a bad Personal Statement take away from your chances of acceptance?

It would probably impact you negatively. I think that it weighs in more a lot more than people think it does. It shows that you can communicate your passion for dentistry in another form, and that you aren't inept at writing. I know a ton of people who are great at writing scientifically but struggle with more "english-y" stuff. If you have an objectively bad personal statement it won't be a good thing. What other aspect of your application would help them get a feel for who you are?

But I agree with the guy above. None of us are on admissions committees, so you can only guess. Just assume it's important and work hard on it.

I agree, it's a part of your application and it's there for a reason, so you should put just as much effort into it as you spent racking up your shadowing hours.

However, to be honest, I do not think it is a test of creativity or imagination. I believe what's most important is that your interest in dentistry appears genuine and thoughtful.

I mean there is an entire section on your AADSAS for your personal statement, so yeah, I guess that it's pretty important

The first thing my interviewer said when I walked in was "I read your essays, you're a great writer. I feel like I really got to know you"

I think it's very important to put a personality behind all the stats and accomplishments you list on your app.

UoP which pretty much Interviews to Accept, the interviewer said my Personal Statement made a big difference.

When you have to choose from similar Gpas and Scores it can make you seem like a fit for the school.
