Hi guys,
I wanted to know how much a PAT score of 17 will hurt. My AA is 21 and Science is 22. My BCP is 4.0, overall GPA is almost a 3.7

I went to good school, work in a dental office, have leadership roles in clubs, and is musically talented

I know that certain schools like UOP and UCLA care a lot about PAT scores. How much do you think that a 17 will affect me as far as getting interviews? Thank you for your responses.

You'll do just fine. I've got interviews at a couple schools already and I got about the same DAT, but my GPA is way lower than yours. As for schools like UCLA or UOP that like high PATs, I can't really say much about those schools in particular, but I believe Columbia also has a pretty high PAT average (in the 20s) and I got an interview with them despite a 17 PAT.

Of course, an interview doesn't mean an acceptance, but hey, it's a start 👍

Thanks for your reply! I applied to Columbia too - that gives me some hope. 🙂

God, are you talking about me? Kidding. 🙂
exactly same thing happened to me.
In my interview in Columbia, the young asian lady said the same thing. I just do not know why they still invite me to the interview with same stat?

Why would they invite you for an interview if right off the bat they won't accept you because of your PAT score?? I think its absolutely ridiculous to spend all that money for a flight and hotel in NYC if they don't have any intention of accepting you with a low PAT. Wouldn't it make more sense to just send a letter telling you to improve your PAT before further consideration?

Has anyone else experienced being told to improve their PAT score when interviewing at Columbia? I would like some information on this, because I will not be a happy camper if I go all the way there and they tell me they won't accept me because of my PAT.

Anybody knows the stat of last year? if it is 18 only, then definitly, at least 2/3 are 17 or less.

well at this site which is accurate ( http://dentalstats.tripod.com/03-04.htm )
it says 2003-2004 pat average was 20. i am going on the assumption that obviously that means some ppl had 17-19's..and others had 21 and 22..with a few 23s. so im hoping my 18 pat wont be a big problem come interview day.

I really don't think a 4.0 BCP and 21/22 (AA/TS) is good enough to get looked at. I don't even think you should send in you cheques to the schools 🙄

well, i got a 15 on my PAT...and i still got an interview at columbia...no one brought up the fact the fact that i needed to retake my DATs....the interviewer didn't even question me..so who knows?

like someone said above, i don't see why they'd bother interviewing students if a low pat score was completely unacceptable...

the dean said getting the interview is the hardest part...and that they accept the majority of interviewees (at least he said that to my group of interviewees...probably because we got one of the earlier interviews and hence, rolling decision will act in our favour)..

when was your interview? thanks for the reply btw...good to know. i also heard that columbia is very serious about whom they choose to interview..not that many post interview rejections if everything goes ok.

my interview was just last friday sept 23rd. i mean, they COULD reject me becuase of my low PAT...but i assume they got over that when they granted me an interview...

now that they have seen me in person, i hope they'll look at the big picture and not emphasise on one pat score...cuz the rest of my application is pretty solid...

i hope i get in though...i was certainly impressed from what i saw and would love to attend...

Why should I worry? The truth is that I worked very hard and sacraficed a lot to do well in my science classes and it saddens me to know that my 17 on the PAT is what everyone on the dental school admissions committee will focus on.
That's the only reason why I brought this up. I guess I was just looking for some reassurance...

This has to be some sort of weird joke. An entire thread full of people flipping out that a single 17 is going to destroy their applications? I know this is SDN, people, but come on, let's get a little perspective here.

UOP takes the PAT just as much as the TS/AA....if you have leadership skills and experience, they'll consider you very highly. UOP loves the leadership quality. The dean himself teaches quarterly on leadership.
