How old were you when you decided to pursue dentistry?
Right now I am 30 and contemplating it.

I am 22 right now. I have to agree with most people that you have to love dentistry to get into this field.

There are quite a few older students who enter dentistry. Several of them are right here on SDN, actually. If you enter in the next couple years, you'll still have a good 20-30 years of practice ahead of you if you so desire.

I started dental school at age 30. When I graduate next June with my DDS degree I will be 34.

Am I too old? Nah. I still got a good 31 years till retirement!

And I'll probably work past that if I get bored playing golf all day. 😀

Nah....just call me up. I'll give ya a challenge. You'll never get bored playing golf!

aphistis, my predental course work is going to involve more than just the standard premed/predental requirements due to my horrendous transcript. So if I were to do this it would take me 3 or 4 years to even put myself in a position to apply.

blankguy, don't worry about age. I am 29 and when I was out interviewing at different schools I met plenty of other prospective students in their mid 30's.

Goodluck!

hey, critterbug
which school are you going next year?

Well, I live in Texas, so I applied to all the Texas schools. Currently, I have my eyes on Baylor, but will make my decision after the interviews (contingent upon acceptance of course 🙂). What about yourself?

I m from California. Shooting for state schools, too.
I will finally turn in my application this Friday.
Have you scheduled your interview yet?

I am 28 and didn't get in last year although I had decent stats, but I will keep applying until I get in. Like UBTom, I plan to work until I am 65 or so, and that is plenty of years to save for retirement. I figure if I do something I love, my blood pressure will be lower, my mind will be sharper, and my stress will be minimal, so therefore I will live to be 100 or so, whereas if I did something only for the money, and had the "work sucks, need the bucks" type of mentality, I would probably die at 54 of a massive MI like my old man did. In the long run, it will be worth it for me to pursue dentistry, no matter how old I am.

A few years from now after you all have graduated with your DDS or DMD... We all ought to get together and hit a few rounds on the links.

Maybe an SDN Dental Charity Golf Tournament to fund a $1000 scholarship for an aspiring dental applicant or something. 😀

Hey. I'll be there.....Fore!!!
