So in the show Nip-Tuck the surgeons have their own anesthesiologist who they pay a salary to and she pretty much just does their cases.. how prevalent is a practice like that? maybe even a small group of anesthesiologists who only cover a small group of surgeons? You would think that if you work well with a specific surgeon then you guys could team up and you could do all his/her cases, that's if you have privileges at the same hospitals..

or is this just not realistic/possible..

Becoming rare these days. Most contracts are taken by large groups or AMCs. It's certainly not something you can walk into out of residency. If you work somewhere long enough and cultivate the relationships, it may happen, but it's quite rare.

Where I worked before, it was one hospital with 5 or 6 anesthesia groups, each working with groups of surgeons. OB group, Ortho group, etc. They've all been bought now, and are all covered under one large supergroup. I guess they still kind of work for the same group of surgeons, but the landscape is very different.

yeah i know what you mean.. and that's what i meant by in my question. i figured it would just make thing so much more simple and easier to deal with if you could team up with a surgeon or two and just do their cases and not deal with the whole AMC thing.. I have a few good friends who are going into surgery maybe if they open their own office and get busy enough one day i'll be able to just work exclusively with them..

thanks for your reply.

If you only worked with 1 surgeon, wouldn't that be a pain for matching up time off? I guess you would need a backup for any day you wanted off and you'd have no work if the surgeon took off. I'm guessing being part of a group would make this easier.
