Hey guys, this is one of those questions regarding intelligence levels to get into medical schools.

Lately with finals and everything I've been wondering things like those students that do get into med school and other post graduate professional schools, how quickly do they absorb and memorize the material ? I only ask because ive been realizing that certain ppl can study a day and a half for a tough 2nd year bio course and they end up remembering everything on the exam and scoring 90s, whereas I on the other hand need to study weeks and weeks ahead in order to achieve those kinds of grades simply because 3-4 days after i memorize something or if i try to memorize vast amounts of info in 2 days, by exam i usually forget many of the tiny details. This sort of relates to medschool cuz i know theres alot of material to memorize and i just wanna know that if in order to be successful in med school, do u have to be one of those ppl that can memorize everything about a course completely 1-2 days and manage to get 90s on exam. U get my point of what im trying to ask, any info u can give will really help. Thanks

I'm sure it's different for every student.

In all honesty, I was thinking this exact same question just yesterday. I then gathered a bunch of friends and paid some mexicans to help me with this study.

What I would do is take a simple text, like Principles of Chemistry by Brown, Lemay and Burstein. I would then Soak it in a bucket for two weeks while slowly adding enough lye to dissolve the entire book including the cover. Then I went and purchased a large box of Bounty (the quicker picker upper).

I then had the mexicans pour the slush remains of the book onto the floor and then proceeded with stripping down till I was buck naked. I also had two other volunteers strip down, one of htem was my friend Jesus(aka Hey-soos) and another was a hot chick that I rented from a girls gone wild set. The mexicans were then instructed to mop the ground with our naked bodies and another group of mexicans was to mop the other spill with bounty. Needless to say, Jesus which was a hairy mofo was the best at absorbing the material with his body, closely followed by the bounty towels. Too bad I had to type the results from the hospital because I forgot to lower the PH using some viniger or liquid fire drain cleaner, but anyway, it was worth it to find out the absorption rates of different things for material.

Now that the stupid has been laid out, I would like to say that the first reply was spot on, it just depends. Personally I can cram the night before get an A and not remember a thing as soon as I turn the handle on the door to exit the exam. My other friend who got in would study so hard, I had a book crawl into my lap and ask me to burn him because he couldn't take it anymore. I also had another friend that would stare at the books but the only thing that would happen was that the books would get smarter. All three of us are going to the same school but in the end we are all different.

I am sure you are a genius and you will do fine, good luck and excuse my asshattery.

^ epic fail

Lolz, thank you for taking time away from your life that you will never get back to read the garbage I posted and then actually reply to it.

/trolling

Lol, sorry for waisting your life.

I read the first paragraph, and didn't read it anymore.

Yeah, the asshat in me came out and said that such a question deserves such a response, but then again, thats just asshattery.

bahahahahahahaha this was hilarious in such weird ways

We all have sponge-like memory capacity and high velocity absorption.

Honestly though, it just requires you to do work every day and sometimes when they hit you hard you have to cram just as hard before an exam. There is no magic to it.

No, I think that only studying for 1-2 days before an exam is probably a recipe for failure for most med students. There's so much material to cover that cramming right before the exam and acing it is nearly impossible unless you have some kind of photographic memory. I studied for at least a few hours every day during my first two years, including weekends, and I go to a school that doesn't even have exams.

It varies on how many weeks of material you have but obviously even then you have to do some work prior. Taking extra notes on the side during lecture or reading review books/robbins is still a requirement prior to that period. During first year though I definitely had to go over the notes at least once prior to that period. When I would have multiple exams per week it made things even more difficult. I wish I had the review books last year as that would have helped. Difference between M2 and M1 is that M2 is a lot more conceptual (pathophys at least). So review books are a lot higher yield than notes in many cases.

I definitely did do a little bit of studying every day in anatomy/histo because there was a month of material and we had three tests a day. Obviously you have to keep up on the stuff as you go plus atlases on the side for lab as it is pure memorization for both classes. Histo had the details from notes and anatomy was worse.

Medical students possess magical memory skills (among others) and are otherwise closely related to Ligers.

I was going to make a joke about using DMSO but that would pale in comparison to what's already been posted.

Also I'm surprised/delighted "asshattery" isn't filtered. And that ligers were mentions.

nothing magical happens, you just get more stressed out (which helps you remember stuff) and get used to studying for long periods of time.

This thread title makes me think of:

so med students end up being sterile.. as they are always busting their balls before their exams?

The magic word is plasticity: the more you memorize, the easier it becomes for you to memorize. Your brain adapts. This is why the hippocampi of London taxi drivers who have to memorize a huge and intricate map is enlarged. I would presume this is true for many medstudents as well.

I hear that medical students absorb information at a rate of 1.2 Jigawatts.

Interestingly enough, apparently gigawatts is actually pronounced jigawatts, so Back to the Future has us all owned.
