How Serious is UCLA About Their Statistics Requirement?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not sure how much truth there is to what my professor said so take this advice with a grain of salt. But he knew someone on their adcom and basically he said they take their math pretty seriously. Definitely call or email, don't leave this one to chance.

How many applicants out of the ~7000 that UCLA received with stats similar to (or better than) yours have met the statistics class *requirement*? The MSAR should be able to give you an idea of what the current crop of matriculants have for GPA/MCAT. This is a somewhat rhetorical question, but the seller-bias in the current MD admissions market must be pointed out.

I haven't taken stats but I have taken

1. Full Year of Calc
2. Multivariable Calc
3. Linear Alg
4. Statistical Mechanics

So I asked them the same question during my interview. You may be able to get them to accept that statistical mechanics course. Call and ask. I completed multivariable calc and linear algebra and they still made me take stats. It is worth it though. I would say stats is the most valuable math skill to have in medical school. I realized this after taking the course and also realize how bad most biologists are at stats.

Stats is the only math skill to have in medical school, other than arithmetic. But even there, the math is easy, it's just knowing when to apply what.
