I have an IPPE at a nursing home and they don't have us doing anything that is pharmacy related. They have me vacuum the floors and set up bingo games for the residents. I spoke with some of the other students at my University and it seems that about HALF have IPPEs at nursing homes with similar conditions.

What would you do in this sort of situation?

Document exactly what they make you do.
Speak to your IPPE/APPE supervisor. State that are you are not learning or in an environment that is conductive to learning and that you are doing tasks that are not part of your education.

Do NOT cause a scene with the nursing home.

Frankly your school is cheating you out of an education by putting you and your classmates into these sites.

How are you going to gain valuable work experiences in order to compete in this job saturated market?

after you finish your IPPE and get credit burn the place to the ground in your review of the site. Get multiple students to draft and co-sign a letter. It seems the trend that IPPEs are mostly junk anyways but this is pretty epic if you are doing BINGO

Most likely his school already know about it but they need sites. I bet his school even paid the site to take their students. They just hope the ACPE won't find out how sh*tty of an education he and his classmates are getting. And how would they? They don't audit sites. They just sit back and let the money roll in from the fee they are getting from all of these schools.

My P1 IPPEs were like this, and from what I hear from other schools this is common. The school's perspective is to get you experience with community service in general. And yes, this is because sites are likely at a minimum in your area.

So, would you suggest contacting the ACPE to get results?

With all the pharmacy schools they have these days, and the lack of rotation sites, it would seem you fell into a school that just can't afford the good rotation sites. Sorry, that's just the way it is. Expect several of your APPEs to be the same way.

What school is this? Hopefully it's not in north carolina.

One of my public health IPPEs had us doing childcare for kids ranging from ages 1-12. Now we weren't supposed to be doing this **** at all. I didn't mind looking after the 8-12 year olds since we could relate since we play the same video games. But the little ones, I freaked out and looked at the female intern that was there with us and told her, "that's all you." Once the rotation was over and we got our grades, we burned the site with our review. School called us in to investigate why we gave such a bad review and after we explained, the location was no longer a site.

My first year IPPE we got to spend 1 hour a week chatting with a local elderly person - seemed pretty worthless - but was supposed to make use feel compassion - ugh - I have none at times. But the actual rotation sites were excellent

You have to take it up with your IPPE supervisor. There's no reason to approach the nursing home staff about it because you're their guest. That's the only way it will help you and future students.

This is not the case at all for my school. For my P1 IPPE, I had an entire shadow week in the MICU and SICU. We were able to choose different hospital settings for the fall shadow week, and in the spring had different community pharmacies to choose from. At what schools is doing general community service common for IPPE?
