Hello guys I’m an African American/white URM I’m confused at how to pick a school list because of my URM status some people say URM with my stats are good anywhere and some say other wise. Can someone help me with how I should be choosing schools with my 508 and 3.81 GPA science is a tiny bit higher at a 3.83 or something. My volunteering are 250 hours of volunteering Non clinically with crisis text line the rest is tutoring. 100 hours in the hospital in a geriatrics program and then I hope to get 50-70 hours of shadowing done before I apply in June. I also have like 5000 hours or something absurd (haven’t counted) in research with 5 or 6 poster presentations. I also have worked tutoring and mentoring students all throughout my college career to put myself through school so I couldn't volunteer as much as I wanted to. But my main question is how do I pick schools. Just how competitive do I become with a URM status? Thanks in advance

Go here:
Assess yourself.
Get some shadowing.
Prosper.

Did you do any academic enrichment programs like SHPEP? Have you reached out to admissions or student services offices about your application since there's still time before applying? Have you reached out to current students through AMSA or SNMA chapters about how the factors they considered when picking schools?

I suggest these schools with your stats:
Toledo
NEOMED
Wright State
Ohio State
Cincinnati
Howard
Meharry
Morehouse
UCLA Drew
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
TCU-UNT
Miami
George Washington
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
New York Medical College
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Indiana

No I’m in my 2nd semester junior year. I’m not sure what AMSA and SNMA is but I’ll look into it. Thank you!

Register for the upcoming AAMC Virtual Fair coming up real soon.
What do you think of my list so far. 508 low 3.8 GPA personally I believe I’m disadvantaged in every aspect that they measure as far as I can tell but I’m trying to stick to the NY/NJ/Penn/Ohio area as I have a girlfriend from NJ. I did safety/reach if I was at their 25% percentile MCAT I took it as a competitor school for me and 50% percentile would be a more safe school.
“Safety”
Wright state (I’m from Dayton, Ohio)
U Toledo
Beaumont

“Match/Tiny Reach”
Cooper
Rutgers (might take off)
Rutgers-RWJM
U Maryland (might take off)
NYMC
Tufts
Thomas Jefferson
Temple (so many apps here worries me)
Qpac
Drexel

“Reach/Shooting for the stars”
U Pitt
Case (I’m an undergrad here)
Yale
Columbia
UCinn

I'd still suggest adding a few DO's. OUCOM of course has a broad statewide base and lots of seats. I don't have much of an issue with your list, as long as you do the outreach I suggested. Are you involved in any minority-focused prehealth groups that do networking with admissions recruiters or diversity/student services admins at med schools?

I looked into those two programs and I didn’t see anything that I could really do but all I did was go to their websites. Do you have any tips for what I can do to network, or what I should look for on their websites? I really only saw stuff for current medical students to do. I was a part of the MAPS program here at my school but because of the virus situation that’s pretty much done I suppose before The application cycle would come up.

I wasn’t aware that networking had any effects on the application process.

Why didn’t you add schools like Ohio State and Northeast Ohio? Those are all public schools so you will get some preference.

Yale and Columbia seem out of reach for you at a 508.

Also, if your goal is NY/NJ/Penn/Ohio, you should add New York Medical College, Albany Medical College, and Geisinger. I would not remove Rutgers from your list either because, in general, you just need to apply to more than 18 schools— even as a URM, and especially with only 3 safety schools.

I must’ve forgotten to list them. OSU is on my list and NYMC! Thanks for the advice
