Hi

Preface: I have been accepted by one school, interviewed at three other schools that I am eager to hear back from, and have not heard back from a handful of schools post secondary.

I just received my grades from the fall semester and did not do so well. GPA was 3.3 (all B+'s) and my cumulative dropped down to 3.64.... all four courses were science courses but none were pre requisites.

1) Should I update schools on the semester (I feel like I have to)
2) How do schools want to be updated? Email, official/unofficial transcript

Thanks in advance.

Only send updates if their positive, substantial changes (volunteered all semester, got a new job, killing it in school, etc) or something critical changed in your app (contact info, dropped a class you reported you would take, IAs, etc)

Therefore, if you wanna send updates to those schools, don't mention the grades. Instead focus on other areas that fit with them and that would sway them in your favor

Do it when they ask. They'll give you specific instructions for their school.

Likely, they'll ask after spring semester... you best be getting your GPA back up by then if you don't want to lose that acceptance (which can happen, but not a guarantee).

Why do you feel like "you have to" send in an update on grades? If you're not asked (and it's rare to get such a request), DO NOT discuss your fall term GPA. You'd just be shooting yourself in the foot. Instead summarize updates on your pertinent activities, add a (personalized) message of why each school is perfect for you, and close by saying you look forward to hearing from them regarding an interview/acceptance as is appropriate.

The only school guaranteed to require a transcript is the one that you ultimately decide to attend. And as @Holmwood said, the news better not be terrible by the end of next term.

Yeah, that is what I thought, but one of the schools I interviewed at expressed during the day that they would like to have grades from the semester when it is over (not a written request but was mentioned during the day)

Would it be worse if I did not update the school and wait until later when they are wondering where my grades from the semester are?

Who said it, and how large was the group to which the information was given? If one interviewer said this to you or to a small interview group, I'd check with the admissions office and ask for their official stance. If the dean mentioned this as part of her official presentation, then you'll still need to call and ask whether they want an official vs nonofficial report. If this is the school where you got an acceptance, I doubt a term GPA of 3.3 will cause a rescission of your acceptance, but if it's one where you interviewed and no decision has been made, you'll need to decide if dragging your feet (and waiting to be reminded) is better than a prompt response that you can hope will be overlooked in the flurry of arriving transcripts.
