I'm taking step 1 a little later than most (august), for financial reasons. I was wondering if there might be any benefit to start studying for step 2 not long after that, and knocking out at least the written step 2 maybe at the end of december? Or is that something you need a full year of clinicals under your belt for?

I really don't know what is on step 2, so any advice would be appreciated.

Step 1 and 2 are not very similar at all. Step 2 is more clinical based, step 1 is more basic sciences. Generally folks who do step 2 after their entire 3rd year but very very early in their fourth year do better.

I wouldn't advise taking step 2 before completing your core clinical rotations.
