How soon should I register?

i think it depends where you are located. You should always be safe and register far in advance, then if you feel you are/ arent prepared, then you can change it within like 48 hours before the exam i believe, or 3 days i forgot.

It's probably better if you register early. I got lucky and found the day I wanted and was able to register 2 weeks before, but you never know if the spots are going to fill up. So basically, register as soon as you know the date you want to take it. And like bing12 said, you can change the date if you don't feel prepared (I believe the deadline to change it is 48 hours prior to the test date).

If I plan to take the test in August, should I register now or could I just select a date a week or two in advance?

register now. I just registered today for august and there's only a few more days open

It depends on where you live and how busy the prometric center is. If you live in a more rural area, then there may be only 1 prometric center that has tons of openings. If you live in the city, you may have like 10 centers but they all will be packed. Short version: Register early

pros- if you find you're not ready as the date nears, you can move the exam to a different date and not have to pay 25 or whatever dollars to change the date (or forfeit your fee if you reschedule in under 48 hours)

cons- you may find that the day you want became unavailable, in which case you will be forced to pick a later date. you may find it highly tempted to procrastinate and keep postponing your testing date since you wont lose any money because you never registered in the first place.
