Just a heads up: This site was absolutely invaluable to me pre-interviews, and is the undisputed king of how-to-tie-a-tie websites: http://www.tie-a-tie.net/. You're welcome.

This is no slight to anyone, but as someone who was tying his own ties when he was thirteen, I am always shocked that there are people applying to graduate school who still do not know how to do this. Just the difference among people's backgrounds.

yeah, i learned how to tie one in like seventh grade. and the other day my best friend and i were getting ready to go to this wedding, and i see him pick up an already tied tie from his suitcase and i ask him what was up with it. he told me his dad ties them and he then takes them to college and never unties them.

i couldn't believe it. and other roommates of mine last year were the same way.

the things that people DONT know should stop surprising me.. but haven't yet.

not that this does, I just recently learned myself 😛

hahahahah. this cracks me up so much. i was in a similar situation with my roommate. he had the pre tied tie also! i knew how to tie a tie since i was like 12. this kid is 22 years old, and he still doesnt know wtf to do. give me a break. it's pretty much like tying your shoelaces. . .second nature.

True, I can tie a tie well. But, I find it hard to tell people how to do it. I guess it's locked up in my procedural, not declarative memory. Wierd.

I know how to tie a tie, but I cant tie my shoes. I am what they call a unilateral tie savant.

I'm a woman and I know how to tie a tie and a bowtie, but my husband uses that website and keeps his ties pre-tied! lol (growing up, my grandfather had a men's clothing store, so of course I knew!)
although it does sometimes save time when he's in a hurry and you can't tell...

I don't know hot to tie one. I either get my girlfriend or one of my friends to do it. I think that after doing it like 10 times, they're getting a little annoyed, so i'll probably learn to do it myself soon.

haha, im amazed at some of these responses.

i hope some of you realize that there are plenty of people who just dont wear ties growing up beyond extremely formal occasions with the family. its a fairly easy thing to learn, i grant you, but its by no means as ubiquitous a skill as you are implying.

Just remember.... "Over, over, up, and through." 😀

Exactly, I never learned to tie one until I was a sophomore in college. Until that point I had probably only worn a tie 10-15 times in my life and always got my dad to do it.

I can tie a tie... sorta, it always looks a bit lop-sided.

I was surprised how many people I met in college didn't know how to pull a calf, saddle a horse, change a flat, mend a fence, or back up a trailer.

But then I realized most people didn't grow up on a farm.

🙄

i dont know how to tie a tie. even after looking at the site. i came very close though. ill try again later.

but thats just cause my dad always tied them for me and ive always lived at home. its sad, i know.

a lot of people know how to tie a half-windsor, but a full windsor, many people don't do that or know how to.

bow ties? most people don't regularly wear those. unless you're tucker carlson or raj from the apprentice.

lol, my father ONLY wears bowties, and he wears one every day to work...it's just a weird quirk of his, maybe (or maybe it's cuz he's southern)
but yes, I learned to tie a bowtie before the other kind
