How did you guys answer the "how many schools have you applied/interviewed at" question. Did you tell them x number or did you just tell them something like a few schools here and a few schools there.

Do you think it would be ok to say, this school is ONE of my top choices without it sounding bad?

When I was asked that I turned it into a a finacial question. My state schools only cost 11K to go to a year. This is versus the 25-35K a year for private schools that I also am interviewing at. I am open and honest about this. I also explain about how I go about selecting my school. Students, professors, happiness, gut feeling, money, and location.

At my number one school I told the interviewers flat out that I wanted to go there. It was a good interview so I felt good in saying that to my interviwers. What makes you think it is bad to say that school is your number one? Unless you get in and turn it down.

I was asked that question at several of my interviews. I simply told them that, yes, I am applying to several schools. The application process is very competitive and I want to maximize my chances at being accepted. All the interviewers seemed very satisfied with the answer, a couple even commented that it was a smart approach. I don't think anyone will be turned off by it. A couple of the TX schools wanted to know if I had applied to all the TX schools and I told them why I didn't apply to the 2 schools with more rural locations. Just be upfront and honest.

I avoided saying that school X was my number one choice. It sounded too cliched to me, like they hear that from everyone. I did make sure the interviewer knew why I wanted to attend the school and how I thought I was a good fit for them.

Good luck!
Theresa
