Well my parents had me and my sister study for the SAT very early on. I want to say since the 8th grade but that may have been PSAT preparation. They had the idea that the SATs were equivalent to the entrance exams they had in Korea .
oh my parents would go on and on about those Korean entrance exams. stories of how they had to learn calculus n sh1t when they were 12 years old. my dad actually didn't make the cut for the national Korean university on the first try. so he studied nonstop for a whole year to repeat the test...barely made the cut on the second try. I thank my lucky stars everyday that I did my education in the states

I think your parents can brag to all the other parents now that you are Dr. Dr. Milonakis heading to Harvard.

Those stories would piss me off. Yeah yeah I get it. You studied 16 hours a day, slept 7 hours a day, and did your bodily chores for the remaining hour. Do I sound bitter 🙂?

"yeah, screw studying. i wanna go outside and play basketball and then play video games after it gets dark!"

Milonakis doesn't sound Korean but it actually is 😉.

My parents grew up in the US but still expected these hours from me. 🙂

oh yeah...what did you think? i was gonna use my real name for my SDN user account?

****...who cares, once i posted my school's match list, my anonymity was shot to **** for sure.

What? You mean AndyMilonakis isn't your real name? beary is my real name.

I felt pretty anonymous until you and quant figured out what lab I'm in. But I don't really care, because I figure the stuff I say on here is basically the same stuff I say in person anyway. So getting to know me on here is just like getting to know me in person, and I don't feel the need to hide my identity in my daily life. 🙂

No, I'm white. I was just saying that white parents can have high academic expectations as well. 🙂

Oh yeah, people of any national origin can have high expectations from their children. Koreans can't be the only ones with that right 😉.

How unfair that would be if that were not to be the case. I would call foul and shenanigans right away!

I actually thought surgery was kinda cool. And the thought process is very directed and to the point. You will like that.
I agree. I should have done Surgery earlier in clerkship. IM late would probably have given me more time to learn ward stuff and ruffled fewer feathers that way.

S: no c/o
I am done with surgery and still have not figured out this shorthand. I thought "c/o" was "complaining of", but that makes no grammatical sense!

i see your point. but that's just the way things were written. what can i say?

i also agree that doing IM right off the bat during M3 year is quite intimidating. i would have done surgery first if I could do it all over again. that way, i would still work similar hours as IM and still get beaten down just as much...so that i could quickly learn to settle into the role as subservient bitch during M3 year.

I am so glad that I already have IM over with. I'm going back on derm!! 😀 And then I have peds.

that's sounds like a sweet deal to me...but i dunno if it's the "IM over with" part or the "derm...peds" part.

I like the surgical approach to drugs.

Pre-op consult. Admit patient and hold meds.
Post-op consult. Follow Medicine's recommendations. Start on home meds ASAP.

:meanie:

One of our patients had a two-page GIM consult note post-op.
Surgeon: "Can you read it for me?"

Summary of recommendations: Change IV NS to D5W1/2NS. Start home meds ASAP.

I'm Polish and Irish. My family would just be happy if I can tie my shoes and maintain my own residence. Of course, they do have high expectations for long lasting marriage and families. I'm a black sheep!

Me too....

In any case, i think anonymity on the net is highly over-rated......a small time geek with decent hacking skills can become you if he really wanted to...thanks to microsoft's hole riddled crap......

Actually, it was dumb luck how I figured out which lab you were in. I think you mentioned something about adenovirus and that you like corn. I put two and two together and figured that you must be in Iowa working for a guy who works on adenovirus. I only know one guy. And in addition to meeting that guy, there was that RW guy too. I threw out the bait with the "Do you know a RW?" and I ended up catching a beary.

So I should have said, "RW, who's that? Never heard of that guy."

Have you met my mentor? He's cool.

He came by my poster at the ASCI conference a few years back and we chatted a bit. Seemed like a cool, laid-back guy given his stature.

That's neat! He is a pretty cool, laid-back guy. I really respect him a lot.

I have never made it to an ASCI conference, but they always look good. I was thinking about going this year but it overlapped right with me going back to med school.
