I was always lost as to how to go about talking about the strengths of a specific dental school should I get a interview. I know that some are strong in clinical studies, or others in research. What other factors should I look for, when I go to each school's site? Where can I look for the strength of a school..is it on their site? etc.

If I want to go into more clinically based school, but I am still applying broadly as I'm not the most competitive and wouldn't complain about getting into a more research based school, should I say that I am interested in a research school?

Some important factors to consider are timing of clinical experience, block tests or midterm/finals, time off to study for boards, letter grades/pass/fail, access to specialties, access to research, access to externships, access to outreach. Just look at each website and see what they are trying to sell you and turn it into something positive to talk about. When you go to an interview, there will likely be a presentation highlighting the school and what they have to offer.

You said it yourself that you are not a very competitive student. Given that, focus on being accepted to a school first.
If you want to go to a strong clinical school, why spending money+time to schools that are not?
It is your decision!
