OK, so I know that for trad applicants, it's pretty simple, but I'm a pretty nontrad nontrad. I've got 2 BS (1 in a non-science field in 2006 and 1 in a science field in 2016) along with about a million different random courses at community colleges/online etc (2nd degree was online and I had to pick up science prereqs wherever I could). Some of the science courses don't apply here since they were for non-majors, etc. Also have some classes I need to retake, and on top of that, I essentially need to take all the science prereqs this spring/summer. Any ideas? Does my GPA include everything I've ever taken? What should I count for science GPA? Basically, I need some sort of ballpark estimate as far as GPA is concerned to figure out where I can realistically apply.

You are required to report all coursework taken. Therefore, your cumulative gpa will be from every course you’ve ever taken. For MD schools, your science gpa will be from ANY biology, chemistry, physics, or math class you’ve taken.

The DO application is a little different. What counts as science is listed on the aacomas website. Here is the link to aacomas. AACOMAS Course Subjects

Ahh, that definitely helps! I'm leaning toward MD but also not counting out DO's. Dumb question - if I retake something, I wouldn't count the original grade, right? I have an F on my transcript for a chem class that I didn't drop in time (I was young and stupid). Retook it the next semester and got an A.

Also - enjoying the similarity between our user names haha!

I hear ya. I made some silly mistakes when I was ~19 that have haunted me ever since. Albeit, I still had a very successful application cycle! So, schools can be forgiving if you show a significant amount of improvement and do well on the MCAT.

In regards to the grades, the F will still be on your transcript, but so will the A.

Haha. Yeah. Sometimes I wish I would’ve made a little bit less of an obvious username. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.

Hope you're right! Went from a 3.2 for my first BS to a 3.9 for my second, hopefully that's enough to make them realize I'm trying. Haven't taken the MCAT yet but hoping to crush it.

How many credits were in your first BS vs your second? What pre-req classes do you still have to take this spring/summer.

Also, make sure you give yourself enough time to study for the MCAT and don’t sit for the exam until your are reaching your target score (ideally 509-513)

First BS was ~128 credits I think? Second was 70-something. I also have 22 grad credits (3.95 GPA) I don't know what to do with from my dietetic internship. I think I pretty much need all the sci prereqs still since none of the courses I actually took already match up to what I need. Pretty annoying. I've got more than enough of the humanities/social science, etc. from my first BS.

Planning to wait to take the MCAT until at least late spring - I haven't taken physics since HS (2002) so I really need to re-learn that.

Not sure if any of these would actually help me out - here are things I've already taken. Thoughts? I've got so much weird stuff on my transcripts that I don't feel like reaching out to every single program I'm interested in unless I have to. I also have a really old 200-level bio from fall 2002 that I got a C in.

Anatomy & Physiology I - BIO 121 (A) - 4 cr (comm college - w/ lab)
Human Anatomy/Physiology II - BIO 202 (A) - 4 cr (comm college but diff school than I - w/ lab)
Inorganic, Organic, Biochem - CHEM-136 (F then retook as A) - 4 cr (comm college - w/ lab)
Nutritional Biochemistry - NHM 361 (A-) - 3 cr (state school, no lab)
Nutrition At Cell Level - NHM 362 (A) - 3 cr (state school, I don't remember this but I think it was a lot of biochem, no lab)
Fundamentals of General Chem - CHEM 1802 (A) - 5 cr (comm college, w/ lab)
Microbio Health Prof Lab/Lect - BIOL 1020L (A) - 4 cr (@ UNE, w/ lab)

So just browsing my MSAR account, if you have 1 year of biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and English, plus at least a 3+ credit hour biochemistry course, 6-12 hours of psych or soc classes, either statistics or calculus, and some other upper level science courses like microbio, genetics, molecular bio, etc you should be just fine. I’m not 100% sure if your A&P 1&2 will satisfy the bio requirement. I had some schools tell me I needed general biology. I’d say the schools you’re most concerned about, it would be worth the quick phone call! Also, most schools have a cutoff date of when they’ll accept credits to satisfy the pre req requirements.

In general, schools reward reinvention and upward trends. Do well in your pre reqs and I think you’ll have a good shot. How are your EC’s? Volunteering with underserved, Research experience, Shadowing, clinical experience, leadership, etc?

That's what I thought - my list is still pretty long, so I need to narrow it down and see who the frontrunners are first, then I'll harass them. I think I need at least 1 bio (prob 2 because I'd like to get rid of that C), at least 1 gen chem, at least 1 org chem, and both physics.

EC's - I'm not entirely sure. I'm an RD and recently did my 2nd BS for that, so I have a ton of nutrition/food service related volunteering. Tons of soup kitchen and food bank hours, stuff like that. Shadowing RD's and then a 1200-hour internship (heavy on the clinical rotations - probably about 2/3) at a large teaching hospital. Currently working as a health coach for a weight loss company - not sure how impressive that will be, but it pays the bills. Also in the process of getting approved to volunteer in the infusion center at my local hospital - right now, heme/onc is my ultimate goal.

I know my resume/life (haha) are nontrad, even for a nontrad, but I'm hoping an adcom somewhere sees something they like.

What if we have over 120 credits but no degree? So anything over 120 credits is considered a post bacc even though I have not graduated from uni yet? Thank you.

No. Post bacc are classes taken after you receive a bachelor’s degree. Classes prior to a bachelor’s degree are considered undergrad. I had ~205 hours that were considered “undergrad”. Of course only 124 counted towards my degree. The others were just misc classes. I still listed them as undergrad classes. Seemed to work out just fine for me.

Thank you for clarifying that.
