E-mail? Over the phone? and should I send a hard-copy letter later? I want to make sure that I give them enough heads-up time but I dont want to be rude...

Phone call to be safe. It is more curteous than an email, but made with less effort than snail mail. (and made in a more timely manner, so they can open that spot up)

i also had to cancel some interviews, and i did it through email

what i would also suggest you do is to ask for a return email from them as well

sometimes emails do get lost in transmission

this will ensure that your interview spot will not go unfilled

I used email if it was pre-interview, and I called for the places I had already scheduled an interview at.

You should always call first and then follow that up with an email or snail mail or fax depending on what the school wants you to send.

I called and/or emailed... thanked them for giving me the opportunity... told them I was accepted to a school close to home... and to please withdraw my application.

i just called DMU and emailed...its so weird actually turning someone down after youre praying that theyll let you in...

I have to turn down another interview today. DMU just invited me .. and I will email back say that I am not interested and that a better candidate can profit from this space. I did that for other schools and they all confirmed by email, except KCOM by snail mail.
