I’m having so much trouble finding hotels to stay in. I’m mainly looking for clean and safe. Google reviews is no help. Half the people say it’s the ritz on a bargain and the other half mentioning stains, bedbugs, trash. THIS IS HARDER THAN GETTING THE II IN THE FIRST PLACE

Maybe look for a major chain with hotels in multiple cities? I like those when traveling for interviews/serious stuff because they give you more of a standard experience than choosing a different hotel in each place. You could join their loyalty program and gain points for each hotel visit - even just being a "member" can sometimes get you extra perks or an upgrade.

If a small city, get the second least expensive hotel near the school. If big city, get the fourth least expensive

Try booking.com or hotel.com. I find the reviews at Trip Advisor pretty good but I agree with @aota22 to find a chain that you are comfortable with. You usually get breakfast, sometimes a shuttle and the points add up.

Choose a reputable corporate operated chain. An M6 is never going to be luxurious but will always be clean and reliable. Holiday inn express will have them cinnamon rolls and corporate accountability. It’s like staying at Starbucks: there’s a floor of reliability even if you’re not going to reach any ceiling of luxury. If you’ve got a car and want to save money, choose one slightly outlying.
