I'm applying to MD/PhD programs for a PhD in Epidemiology. As you all know, not all schools will entertain the idea of an Epi application, and it's not always clear from website info etc. So I need to contact a lot of schools and ask if they consider Epi MD/PhDs, and I'm not sure how to construct that email. I have a perhaps irrational fear of looking like a goober to the bing honchos in charge of MD/PhD programs and/or their assistants. Does anyone have suggestions for what I should be asking in an email inquiry? Thanks!

i'd personally recommend calling the programs. i have called a few schools with questions and they are happy to help.

I don't see how at all you'd be considered a Goober. I think in general people are very scared of contacting MD/PhD programs, when in reality they want to hear from you. Obviously there are certain people that are harrassing or crazy or whatever, but a normal inquiry by phone and/or e-mail is perfectly reasonable.

Good luck!

PS: I can tell you Penn will probably recommend you apply. This doesn't mean you have a chance, but they will definately consider you.

Agreed - call. Since I was the only epi person for awhile (we finally got another - woot!), they would often direct inquiries from prospective applicants to myself or my mentor. The program wants to find a good match, so I think they appreciate individuals investigating the school to assure that the program will meet the students' needs.

If you call someplace and find that they laugh off your interest in epi, you REALLY don't want to go there 🙂

(Go Hawks!)

You might also want to look for schools that have strong or well funded Epi programs. I'm doing a non-traditional PhD as well and I found it easier if you look for schools with both a med school and a strong tie to the PhD program you are looking for. It will make the transition easier if they have never had a student in that program before.

Thanks, everyone. Along those lines, if a program offers several people's contact info, am I better off sending my inquiry to, for instance, the Md-PhD in charge of the program? The program coordinator? Student Committee members?
