From a reliable source, I just found out that I was accepted to UC Davis. The formal acceptance letter will probably not arrive until sometime next week. Currently, I'm also holding an acceptance from another school. Since the acceptance will come after 5/15, I was wondering how much time I'll be given to decide between the 2 schools. Thanks plenty. (If this question has been asked before, please excuse me.)

First of all Congrats!

I think they give you at least a week, if I remember correctly.

congratulations on your acceptance! I'm in a similar situation with a different school. So, by May 15 you can only hold one acceptance. My interpretation is that if you receive another offer after May 15, you have as long as the school will give (usu 1 or 2 weeks) to accept that offer, and when you do you must turn down the other acceptance. Personally, I count all dates from the date of receiving the snail-mail notification.

So, you have time.

Ooh, you wouldn't be hanging on to an Irvine spot, would you?

My other acceptance is from the NYU MSTP, which makes this decision a little complicated. Ultimately, I want to become a physician scientist. But at the same time, I do not want to leave California. UC Davis is only an hour away from my parents' house, but the school only offered me a MD spot. This means if I were to go there, my family will have to pay for my 1st year of medical school (assuming that I get in their MD/PhD program after 1st year).... 🙁

Any thoughts on that?

If you're strong enough to gain admittance to NYU's MSTP then I'm sure you'll gain admittance to UC Davis' as well. It may require you paying for med school for the first year, but remember, that's going to be UC INSTATE prices, TOTAL savings will be huge. I agree with the previous poster. MSTP programs are demanding yet rewarding. You will have to spend at least 3-4 years earning the PhD ontop of the 4 years of med school. If you don't want to be 8 years away from fam then go UC. If you want to become a new yorker, than NYU is for you. But I would rest assured that you can't make a wrong decision between the two places. you have to go where you'll be your happiest because that's where you'll be the most successful.
