Take a polaroid of your middle finger and write your name on the bottom and send it to them.

Mail them a rejection letter you got sent from a different school, just cross out your name and write in theirs.

Ha! Funny you should mention it, but that's almost what I did: when I called Penn and found out I was accepted, I then asked about the scholarship. When Corky said "Not this round, sorry" all enthusiasm immediately left my voice and I responded, rather dejectedly "Oh, OK. Thanks." I think she understood that I wasn't coming because of the cost. Actually, she probably already knew as I was very honest in my interview.

I wouldn't go burning bridges... you never know when you'll cross paths with these guys again. Just write something like "after much thought, I have decided to decline your offer of acceptance. It was a difficult decision [put in compliments to the school if you want]. I appreciate your consideration for acceptance at School X."

I can't believe you didn't get the scholarship though. I have a UPenn interiew coming up soon and I was hoping to get one, but now I am having doubts I will.

When you say you were honest at the interview, did you tell them that you would go to UPenn only if you got the scholarship?

Whenever you make up your mind? Some people are still waiting for interviews/acceptances, so if you know already I wouldn't delay. But don't rush your decision at the same time since it's such a big decision.

Are scholarships sent out at the same time as acceptances? or not? It will be hard to decide on a school if they don't let you know about your scholarships until waaay later....

or just say nothing...the schools will know on Jan 15th when they still haven't recieve your deposit $$$

I would write a letter, being very polite and saying that you regretfuly decided to decline. Its always nicer if you write a letter and do things properly. It is however to be on this side of the coin now, though.

It was a great interview. My interviewer was Japanese-American and really into opera, so we instantly had something to talk about there (I studied music and lived in Japan, so I think they planned this). Actually, most of the interview was just chatting about these things. He had read my blog, though, and knew the schools to which I had applied. So, when he asked "How does Penn rank?" and told him "I really like the school, but without a scholarship it would be a tough decision to make." I didn't say I WOULDN'T go, though. I then asked him what he thought my chances at a scholarship were and he said it looked good but the committee decided.

Maybe that was a little bold, but I didn't want to play the butt-kissing game and tell every school I would definitely come to their school if accepted when it was fairly clear that I was going to be accept to my state school (which I think is a great school). I was even more straightforward with Maryland: I told them what schools I applied to, why, and that Maryland was basically last on my list, and they haven't even accepted me yet (surprised? yeah, me neither).

I think there's more to me not being offered a scholarship from Penn, though. I didn't have any upper level science when I applied and I still don't have many of the "recommended" classes (Cell, Micro, etc.). I also only decided to go into dentistry just August 2006, and I might have come across as too whimsical, like I just chose dentistry based on the feeling of the moment rather than careful planning and devoted hard work.

I'm actually still waiting to see if Penn changes their mind, though I don't think I'll go there now even if I get a late scholarship. I would LOVE to go to Colorado, even at a steeper price, but no interview yet (no rejection, either, though). I'll probably go to Indiana, though, which is great. I get more and more excited about it every day.

This is too long, but I just wanted to see that I do plan on sending out formal rejections/withdrawals to schools soon. Letter to Penn, email to Maryland (that's how they communicated with me).
