Hey everyone, I have pretty strong ties to TX despite being a nonresident. If anyone is familiar with the TMDSAS application, could you tell me if there are any essay prompts that would allow me to explain my ties like "Why Texas?" or something along those lines? I only ask because I noticed that many TX schools don't have secondaries, in which case I don't know how they'd know of my ties.

Texas applicants, I need your help! Thanks!

TMDSAS Optional Essay #1? I'd certainly count strong state ties as "unique circumstances...that are relevant to your application."
Optional Essay 1:
Briefly state any unique circumstances or life experiences that are relevant to your application. This is not an area to continue your essay or reiterate what you have previously stated - this area is provided to address any issues which have not previously been addressed.

Actually, I just remembered seeing in another thread that there may be a an essay prompt that asks about your Texas residency or lack thereof. Is this true?

I checked my completed TMDSAS from last year and only see the following questions in the "Residency" section:
US Citizen? (Y/N)
State claimed as legal residence: (dropdown)
Graduate high school/GED in Texas (Y/N)
Live in Texas for 36 months prior to high school graduation or GED: (Y/N)
By Oct 1 of this year will you have lived in Texas continually for the last 12 months: (Y/N)
TMDSAS Residency Decision: (whatever state) Resident
Official State of Residence: (dropdown)

I was an non-resident who applied via TMDSAS last year. However, I was born in Texas and lived there for a long time before my family moved out-of-state.

The following was provided as an optional question in my TMDSAS app for the 2013 cycle: Please enter any further information we should know regarding your residency (600 character limit)?

This was in addition to another questions they ask to verify for residency.

Interesting. Do you, or anyone else, think that under some circumstances "state ties" should be mentioned in the 600char essay instead of the optional essay #1 (and vice versa?)?

Do a Texas-size Texas-related EC?

Ha, but I already have the tie. I'm just wondering whether it should be mentioned in the optional essay or the residency essay. I get the feeling that the 600char question asking about residency is just a formality/miscellaneous or something.

Anyone have any idea what kinds of ties go where?

Then just mention it. If it's genuine, they'll take it. If it's BS, they won't. It can only help.

Sigh... If only I was from Texas.

If you get an interview wear a pair of these

I never thought about trying to claim (I'm guessing a sort of residency status?) for Texas schools. I lived near Austin for 8 years of my life. Would this be worth the trouble to do for the Texas schools?

No. It will not help you much, if you are not a resident. They do seem to like some military.

My friend got in to UTSA with less than stellar stats as an OOS. Although she keeps deferring as she failed to realize she'd have to complete her ROTC commitment before going to medical school. :smack:

OTH, I got no love from the Texas as OOSer military with Texas ties (I was at Ft. Bliss for 4 years and left about a month before I applied). My stats sucked though, so that might have had something to do with it.

For me, I definitely felt like it was a waste of my time to fill out the TMDSAS.
