Hi,

Just curious, how do dental schools validate the shadowing hours? Should I ask the dentist to write a letter to certify the hours I've spent shadowing at his/her office?

Thanks!

you could do that. For the most part, there is no sure way to validate it unless the ADCOM is very suspicious of what you claim. If they are, they will likely just question your experiences to see if you truly did shadow that many hours.

If they are suspicious they can either call... or just ask you a simple question about a procedure.

Blank out and it'll be reason for concern~

I told my dentist to specifically write in the letter how many hours I shadowed him.

agreed just have the dentist add the # of hours in the actual letter of recommendation (which you need for most schools) and then u should be fine.

I think in very rare cases they would contact the dentist if there was any uncertainty.

I know that Tufts REQUIRES the dentist to put how many hours you've spent w/ them in there.

Thanks everyone! It's really good to know. I talked to the dentist I shadowed and she knew nothing about this shadowing requirement (she graduated years ago).

So, I assume I'll provide this shadowing information on the application?

Thanks!
