As an resident or attending (but mostly resident), does anyone think it is inappropriate to dress very well, as in, nice watches, nice cufflinks, generally expensive looking clothes?

As with most things, you want to aim for the middle ground.

Cheap and sloppy is out; so is overdone and flashy. Think "classic" and "conservative," and you'll be on the right track.

"If people turn to look at you on the street, you are not well dressed." -Beau Brummel 😉

I don't really agree. I think if you're interested in dressing well, then go for it. i agree that you don't want anything outlandishly flashy, but french cuffs and a nice watch are great for your image. dress to impress bro.

if you dress up in fancy stuff, don't be surprised to get surprised looks from some of your colleagues. it's not a bad thing, it's just that most people don't expect residents to have enough money to be stylin' GQ stuff. but i don't think it's inappropriate, just unexpected.

I say just spring for some badass scubs like cottonality or kittyphat... that way you can split the difference... 🙂

It's sorta like highschool.. dress too fancy and you will stand out and they wont like you or be jealous or stare at your breasts (insert your favorite reason)... dress too crappy and you will stand out and they wont like you as well cause you make em look bad or you look bad and they are embarrassed to be with you (insert your favorite reason).

Of course there is a difference between dressing nice and dressing revealing.

Beau Brummel's quote by Kent sums it up nicely. Stay in the middle.

And keep in mind that, as a surgery resident (as your name implies), you're clothes are often exposed to patients' bodily fluids, the general dirt and grime of the hospital, and the often cramped confines of a locker, or worse, randomly hanging up in a locker room somewhere where they can frequently fall on the floor or "go missing."

As a med student, I tried to dress up more, but occasionally ruined nice stuff and ultimately decided to save my nice duds for the outside world. As an anesthesiology resident, I rarely see patient in anything but scrubs anyway.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect many surgical residents to wear nice clothes, maybe only on the special occasions. But, what about as an attending, like when seeing patients in the office or something. Would nice suits and stuff like that send out the wrong message, like I am money crazy or something? Like that guy on Dr. 90210, Dr. Rey. Nice suits are fine, but when you start going pink and the hair and all that, I think that is a bit too much. But you guys think that nice suits/ watches, just not too over the top, is fine?

 at people so clueless they need to be told what to wear.

if you dress like a slob, you look bad.

if you dress like like a millionaire every day, you look bad as well.

nothing wrong with looking good every now and then if you want.

yeah, that was hard to figure out.

i'd say the manner in which you dress, or should be prepared to be dressed, is dependent on the residency program and situation.

if you're a psychiatry resident, i'd imagine wearing scrubs everyday might be frowned upon.

but if you're a general surgery resident, it's likely scrubs every day of the week, save for the occassional clinic rotation.

given that your sn is "surgeon guy" i'm assuming scrubs are the norm.
