I cant find the answer in any of the searches, so I'm hoping you can help. I took a math class that gives a grade at the end of the semester but it isnt factored into your GPA. How does this effect your GPA once you apply to a DO school?
Is it the same as MD schools where the grade you were given is factored into the GPA as any other full credit class?

Thanks!

Yes. If you were given a grade for the math class, then AACOMAS will include it in your overall gpa. AACOMAS doesn't include math in the science gpa only BCP, opposed to BCPM for MD schools. Your school didn't include math in your gpa? Or am I misunderstanding something?

haha no they did but one of the math classes I took. They give you a grade. But they dont factor it into your GPA. So for example, If I took 3 classes that semester and got an A, A and a C. C being in the math course, I'd still have a 4.0gpa. So thats how it works in my undergrad but I'm curious how it would play out if I apply to a DO school? It's just for 1 class, the rest of my math courses factor in right away.

are u saying for the core pre-rec GPA, the one they look at most. DO schools dont include math? Just bio, chem and physics?

My understanding is that both AACOMAS (DO) and AMCAS (MD) want to know about every class you've ever taken - including your withdrawals - from any institution. This would include the course that your undergrad did not count in your GPA.

The largest differences between the AACOMAS and AMCAS GPA systems are
a) AACOMAS only counts your re-take toward your GPA calculations whereas AMCAS counts both grades you received toward your GPA.

b) AMCAS counts Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math in your "Science GPA" whereas AACOMAS counts only Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in your "Science GPA"

There are other differences but those are the two major ones. I hope that helps. Even if you performed poorly in the course, report it, and make sure to report any obscure classes you may have taken at secondary institutions. You definitely don't want those things to come back and bite you.

If it is a course that isn't listed with a grade (I have one it was my EMT course's test) it is listed as "Exempt" for both systems. However, if it has a grade, P/F, ABCDF, you must list it, whether or not your school factors in the score.
