email the doctor if there is contact email for him or ask the administative stuff? Sorry for the naive questions! It seems that a lot of doctors do not have contact information. Thanks!
Personal acquaintances are always the best place to start (did my first shadowing with a friend of the family). Other than that, try checking for any connections at your college. Last choice would be just having some one on one time with the phone book.
* Work/volunteer at a hospital and go from there.
* Mass email the nearest teaching hospital and ask if you could shadow them, know somebody, or if they have a shadowing program.
Yes, shadowing them makes a difference. I did my clinical shifts for medic school in the ED, ICU, and OR, but you never really get an appreciation for what the physician actually does on a micro-level.
I.e. Doing my clinicals I saw the docs a lot, and saw how they cycled through and picked and chose their patients. When I shadowed one of the same docs, there was more insight into why they do this or that, how they interact with the patients, what they do when you don't see them out front, etc. So I would def recommend shadowing a doc in addition to your volunteering.
