How to find a first job?

We all know that plastics doesn't exactly have job listings in many geographical areas. So how do you go about finding a job? Are you stuck having to move to the midwest where there are the most/only listings? Or can you just reach out to various practices and hospitals in the city you want to live in and ask them if they might consider hiring you? Anyone with any strategies that have worked? Especially if you are trying to relocate to a city or area that isn't where you trained?

anyone have anything that has worked? seems like a lot of jobs just hire internally and it is hard to break into a new area (skepticism that you are committed to relocate). only luck i have had is within my state.
