I was wondering if anyone knew where/how to find out how much new associates in a specific area make. I'd like to negotiate and knowing the median would help so I don't get lowballed or go too far.

btw this place is offering 26% production (seems low) and 3 year commitment (way too long). The state has no income tax tho...need to figure out more details/negotiate if I get an offer. Thanks!

Well I worked in two states (NY and VA), and regardless of income tax, i was offered 30% collection for the first one and 33% off of production off of the second one. The 3% difference was bec the second place was 85-90% HMO practice so they were willing to sweeten the deal like that. also there should be a minimum as well (mine was 500/day) just to give you some cushion there.
26% seems rather low, are u a new grad?, dont let them fool you into believing you should get less bec you dont have much experience. the rates usually are standard, now i dont know which state you are in so i dont know what's the norm there, but like i said most people i know are getting between 30-35%.

you also have to look at the type of practice and how much revenue they're generating. you definitely want a guaranteed minimum (for at least 3-6 months), otherwise they have no real incentive for keeping you busy. nobody can tell you what the average associate salary is; it vary's from state to state (city to city for that matter). here in FL i've been hearing 30-35 % of collections with guaranteed minimum of $500/day

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, new grad in WA. I will try for a daily minimum or ~30% prod. Also, def a 90 day trial period to see what the practice is like. The practice is 100% FFS and has 5 GPs, 1 perio, 1 endo, 1 ortho as well.

The following is nationally, I don't have regional data.

This is from the ADA Survey of new dentists 2008

Average income (before paying income tax) of Employee/Associate dentists in private practice

Full time: $131,760
Part time: $102,330

Income information:

Hourly rate (11.8% of respondents): mean $68/hr with a min of $30 and max of $187

Annual salary (18% of respondents): mean of $108,610 with a min of $22,000 😱 and a max of $200,000

Percent of production (34.5% of respondents): mean of 32% with a min of 1% and a max of 50%

Percent of collections (30.7% of respondents): mean of 34.3% with a min of 5% and a max of 60%

(There was a section listed as other type of compensation that equaled 15% of respondents)

What does an associate a year or a couple years out generally produce in a day? and a year?

That depends on:
A) your clinical Speed
B) you skill level- can you place implants, Molar endo's etc..
C) the practice- number of patients in the practice, payer mix- Medicaid patients vs Fee for service
