How to get grip of Beh Science?

Hi guys..

I am an IMG, taking step 1 in July. I have done 2 reads for almost all subjects (except Beh Science for which I have done only about 30% of 1st read). I hate the subject and I tend to get bored while reading it. Just can't concentrate and go through the subject!

Please advise me how to nail this subject.

Resources: I have Kaplan, HY Beh Sci and BRS Beh Science, HY biostats.

I think BRS Behavioral & questions should be good. Questions might help make it not as boring. Or just find/read/watch something that motivates you like crazy before u start a boring topic! 😛

Em, I'd say you have enough time to read all those sources if you need them.

I think BRS is better than Kaplan for Behavioral Sciences. HY biostatistics is also good if, like me, you had a very poor biostats background.

Well keep it up you've made a lot of good progress and I'm sure it'll pay off. 👍 Personally I would use HY behavioral. I've heard nothing but good stuff about it from several of the gunners at my school who scored 260+. HY biostats is also supposed to be the best one out there on the subject, but it's kind of low yield, so it really depends on how much time you have and how strong you're feeling about the other subjects.

I'd actually recommend BRS behavioral over HY behavioral (i have both and used both for class) if you are really struggling with the subject. The material presented is pretty much the same and you can get through HY faster, but the questions at the end of each chapter for BRS are very helpful to make sure that you are learning/remembering what you're reading.

Well I was in the same situation.
I suggest you to read through Kaplan DSM 4 and then try going through lectures particular to that chapter from kaplan videos and then start solving questions from brs behavioral (try to differentiate among major, manic, dysthemia, and cyclothemia) and may be other sources.
If you do not understand schizophrenia then I suggest you to watch the movie 'A beautiful Mind' -- this really helped me understand schizophrenia
I did this after my last nbme and i feel comfortable with UW questions now. my overall correct percentile on UW in behavioral was 29 (see how bad I was)
so you know how to proceed now.

So guys who are stuck like me in this subject, as people have suggested above, final consensus statement would be
1) bird's view of Kaplan Behvioral Science LN
2) For topics which don't go through your mind, see videos.
3) BRS book - go through whole of it incl questions and learn the how to D/D.

Then, finally - lots and lots of questions from every possible qbank 🙂

IIRC both HY Behavioral and BRS Behavioral are written by the same person and are pretty similar. I personally have HY and I think it's quite solid. HY Biostats is really good too if your biostats class was weak (mine certainly was).

By the way, my approach to ethics questions I'm unsure of is essentially What Would Jesus Do (lol). If you're unsure, pick the least combative, least arrogant, most touchy-feely, most pleasant response possible and you'll generally be right.

Hi,

If the issue is boredom and NOT A PROBLEM OF UNDERSTANDING THE MATERIAL, I would DO UW/kap/Rx all the qbanks that u are enrolled on, and just throw URSELF ALOT OF BS-TEST.

Now if the problem is that u r bored, bcuz u dont understand the material. You must find the time to go thru the Books or course. Then do the questions...

U can do this, get motivated.... Also... JUST TRY TO DOING IT IN PIECES throughout the period of days u have left.... B4 u knowit, u have covered all the material in bits and pieces, as u do other subjects.
