i am a 3rd year US medical student. i currently live at home with my parents. i am currently loaning money from them to pay for my tuition and am living off their money.

however, i would like to move out and take out a real loan (government money--file as an independent???). the problem is, i have no money, and i don't even know the basics.

how can i get a loan? how long does it take to apply for one?

You go to your student affairs office and ask to meet with a financial counselor for advice on applying for federal student loans.

Moving to the Financial Aid Forum where you will get more information.

You want to move out this year? Well it's kind of late to do your FAFSA I believe. But either way that's the first step after talking to your financial aid office about deadlines. I assume if you have a lender set up as soon as your aid report from the FAFSA is complete then you may be able to get your stafford federal loans.
