I was waitlisted at my top choice UVA and was wondering what I can do to try and get off of it without having the school think im annoying or psychotic. I have the stats and ec's I dont know what else they want.

IT is unlikely that you will get pulled from a waitlist until May but in the meantime stay in touch with up-dated information for your file (e.g. you are elected club president, publish a paper, present a poster, accept the Nobel Prize, etc). If you go out of town, send the Dean of Admissions a post card saying "Thinking of you... wish I were there. UVA is my first choice."

A member of an ad com (!) told me that when she was waitlisted she called the admissions office every day for a month. They eventually let her in ... now she's on the faculty ... of another medical school.

You could hunt down and kill accepted students...or at least bribe them to go somewhere else.

arajpar, I am in the same boat with you, I got waitlisted at UVA too. From the letter they sent, it seems as if they basically dont reject anyone who's interviewed straight out. I am somewhat pessimistic of my chances of getting of the waitlist since the letter said 70-80 people wait for a few spots. Too bad their waitlist isn't ranked, atleast that way we'd know what are chances are.

Reading that post and looking at your avatar at the same time is priceless. 🙂

I sent all my schools my updated mcat score (which increased alot 🙂) do you think that will pull me out of the waitlist piles???

You are not going to get off a waitlist until the adcom figures out that so many of their offers went unaccepted that they still have empty seats. Because so many people hold multiple offers until May, and because schools are still chosing their top choices, you must just bide your time.

From May until August, the adcom (or the Dean of Admissions) has the job of finding waitlisted applicants to fill empty seats. It is almost like finding a date for the prom. Some of those waitlisted applicants will have had offers from other med schools. Deans don't want to waste their time calling those applicants so they will call those who have signaled that they are available and interested. Your job come May is to signal that you are still available and still interested. Sometimes seats become available at the last minute due to all sorts of odd circumstances. If you are still waitlisted in August and you can move quickly if called, tell the Dean of Admissions. For now, just wait quietly.

On a related notes, anyone out of state get an interview at UVA yet...if so when and when were you complete?

The two main ways are to get accepted or to get rejected. I prefer the first, so I would suggest it.

Doubt it. MCAT and GPA's seem to be more important for getting an interview. I think providing an update on research, publications, and other EC's would be more important for getting off the waitlist.

I am still trying to figure out how to get ON the waitlist 🙁

Chicken blood. And goat sacrifices.

There is always the proactive measure-- withdrawing your application!!! 😉
