Hey everyone,
I've been working with a group down here in the south for about one year. SHortly after joining the group, I realized it was not the group for me. Most of the group are in their early 50s. Run about 10 rooms plus OB. Usually cover 4 Crnas. Turns out the administration is tryin gto bring about change, and even brought in outside groups to put up a bid. THe group provides a very prro service to the ASU/PACU/surgical staff. Letting Crnas show up 20 minutes late, leaving early, partners all screwing eachother over

I started interviewing about 6 months into things to leave. About the same time, one of the partners gets kicked out of a pre-op room because the husband smells booze on the partner's breath. The partner is definitely an alcoholic, but a functioning one. As well, another partner has a serious drinking problem, as does one ofhte Crnas. In addition to this, and I kid you not, we have a guy that is 72 going on 92 as a 40 hour per week employee/former partner. He had an MI two years ago, then sfferred an intraop MI on the table during a CABG. He is loaded on Beta blockers and falls asleep often in the OR. Hands down he has hurt patients. I have cought him doing spinals at T8 with a 22 quinke, horribly managing patients volume/blood status. I am not sure he has killed anyone, but he has certainly led to the demise of some patients. He has no right to be practicing anymore. He can noteven stand up and balance himself...However, he is only 90 bucks an hour, andthey make him cover four rooms....Great group huh??

I spoke to the CEO about some of this, as I had a friendly relationship with him. Still nothing has been done. I have a new job which I start October 8th, as long as my license is in. I gave the group a resignation notice, and then while I was on vacation they gave me a termnation note with 60 days and suppossedly my regular paycheck. Well, just got my paycheck and it is about half.

I do have a very good employment lawyer. It has already cost me about 10 grand. THe group is convinced that I was involved with bringing in some of the other groups, which I was not, but I did discuss the problems with the group with the hospital. Arguably a violation of my contract vs the overall safety of the patients.

Anyway, these jerks are giving me a good you know what, and I was wondering if any of you have gone through this.

Should I report the drinking and the near dead doc to the state board of medicine?? Can this be done anonymously???

This is a most horrible experience, and any advice support would be greatly appreciated. My new group knows of most of these issues.

Ciao

..and distance yourself legally as fast as you can. I recommend some sort of separation agrement...talk to you lawyer. They will eventually do themselves in.

So you are getting jipped out of 1/2 a month pay. Is that right?

I'd go right into the office or group meeting and tell them what you know. I'd threaten them with the information about alcohol and whatever you have on them. I'd have a letter typed up to the state medical board to present to them.

Then I'd say, "We can part quietly or we can do it legally, your choice." But you don't have that much to lose since they are already withholding your money. So what if they withhold more, you are getting out and in the mean time you will be doing a great favor to the many pts that they care for by reporting them.

Personally, I'd stick it to them hard.

And I'd work on my grammar if I was you.

That would seem like a tempting solution, but it seems prudent to consult with your attorney before taking this course. If you pursue this angle, it would be best for the lawyer to subtly bring this up. Otherwise, it sounds like blackmail, which if brought to light could cost a lot more than a half-month's pay.

yes. In my state (ca) this can be done anonymously.

also, I would keep your paycheck separate from the quality issues.
