How to get started in research?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I also have a question regarding research. I have about 2+ years (2000+ hrs) of experience in an exercise physiology lab at a USDA site. I don't have any publications as I didn't help write anything but I carried out the research and organized the data.. Do you need to be published for it to be beneficial if you choose to specialize?

Focus on school your first year. It is very difficult to make up a lower class rank while easier to get research later on. I love research and am starting a research project this summer, but I would absolutely focus on your grades D1 year.

I would reach out to faculty members who are involved in projects and just jump on. I did multiple projects. Some took me less than 30 hrs over a few months. I think it's worth starting even as a D1.

Starting early got me on to my biggest project, as my mentor trusted my work ethic, and I ended up publishing a chapter in a textbook.

You can also reach out to residents who are usually doing projects and ask to jump on to theirs. You will be doing fairly menial tasks like citing references, making posters/tables etc at the beginning, not bench research on biochemistry. You don't have to commit to a very extensive list of things, but one project won't cause most people's grades to tank in D1 imo. that being said, you could get started after a your first round of tests so that you are in a comfortable rhythm in your studies.
