I am look into interning at a dental office soon. For those of you that have interned, did you set it up yourself with the school and the practice or what? My school undergrad doesnt have that many connections in the area with dentists so its a little hard. I have built some connections with myself using my predent club.

I'm hoping to kill a GE and have the experience of working in a dental office, and not just shadowing.

Internships are usually affiliated with school and can go towards school credit. I had one through my school for 4 credits, but it required that I keep a journal of my daily experience and write a lengthy research paper on a topic of my choice. Go to your career services and ask if they have any dental internships, most schools have several. Mine had 2 per semester. You'll have to apply for it and they usually have GPA restrictions (like 3.2 or above). An internship is just a formal shadowing experience. Sometimes they will let you do more and participate in the procedures, but its not as glorified as it sounds.

Oh I just saw you said "working". I have never heard of an intern getting paid in a dental office. There is not much you are qualified to do. It's more about the experience. If you wanna work, try and apply for a dental lab position. I did, but they wouldn't hire so I just went in for a couple of weeks and took a simulated training course on model & dye, tooth waxing, porcelain painting, and detailing. Good experience though
