How to look for residency programs of interest?

Hi,
US IGM post graduate here, looking for surgery residency programs in USA. What exactly should I look out for to know that is a good residency program?

From what I understand, you would need to do prelim surgery (which is often a dead end), as categorical is very tough to get for IMG right away. Apply categorical maybe, but I wouldn’t expect much. FM as a backup

In your case a good residency program is one that will take you. The surgery IMG match is brutal.

As alluded to above--it is extremely competitive. What are your USMLE scores?

As an IMG, you Google every single program in the country and look for any that have ever taken an IMG in the last 5-7 years. Start there. Then you email those residents directly if you need more info about what they did, prelim, research, connections, etc. Be sure you don’t confuse FMG with IMG - plenty of great programs have taken FMG from good schools, but few have taken true IMGs.

That should give you some place to start. It’s an uphill battle and may take a few years. Definitely have a backup plan.
