I'm taking med chem starting next month, so I do not comment from direct experience. However, for Orgo, I memorized structures and mechanisms by using a dry erase board. Draw it out, erase, and repeat until you can do them in your sleep.

This is like the only class that I found Organic Chem useful for.

You need to memorize the skeleton structures for each class of drugs that you are studying. Once you do that, you can concentrate on the location on the skeleton structure where there is a small change in a functional group that accounts for the different activity in the drug.

i used flash cards.
5 minutes at a time, a couple times a day, for at least a week before the test..

Have you ever had to memorize amino acids before? I had to know them all for high school and it helps to make flash cards and memorize them 3-4 a day (you have an exam next week so determine the appropriate number) while going over the older ones from past days. We also had to remember terminology like zwitterions and things like that.

It also helped a lot of other students to make dirty mnemonics to remember them. Yep, I'm recommending to make med chem dirty since you're more likely to remember them.

1. Your high school must have been waaaaay better than my high school.
2. Flash cards don't work for me so well with structures. I make big test sheets (photocopying @ Kinko's!) and practice drawing structures.
3. Dirty mnemonics only take you so far. I think the hardest part of biochem was remembering all the dang intermediates of cycles and how to draw them. Even if I remembered the intermediate, it was 50/50 whether I remembered how to draw it. Not an easy class for me.
4. I imagine med chem is harder. I like the dry erase idea up above. This thing looks cool, too: http://www.amazon.com/Boogie-Board-LCD-Writing-Tablet/dp/B002ZE4TDI
